Tapestry of Grace DE Review

Buzz, buzz! I’ve long heard buzzing about Tapestry of Grace, but hadn’t had the chance to check it out. I recently got the opportunity to check out one unit of the new digital edition (DE) via the TOS Crew. Did ToG live up to its hype? Well, yes and no. Huh? Read on for my pros and cons.

First, the pros: Tapestry of Grace is a thorough, classical, biblical, literature-based, multi-level, reusable curriculum covering several subjects (history, geography, literature, church history, and even philosophy—for older students). It follows a four-year history cycle in four different levels—lower and upper grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric. As you go through it, your children will cover each historical time period three times at different levels over the course of their schooling. What else do you get? A PLETHORA of information each week on the people, events, and time periods being covered (think major encyclopedia articles), a thread covering the main emphasis and general overview for the week, a weekly reading assignment chart divided by levels, student activity pages, and discussion questions (with answers for you!) for older students. ToG provides writing assignments, teacher’s notes, art studies and activities, vocabulary words, timeline suggestions, activity suggestions, and more. You also get access to ToG’s Loom, an online area featuring many extras for additional learning and additional helpful topics. You also get access to their very active forums where you can interact with veteran ToG users, newbies, support tech, and even the author herself on occasion.

We previewed Year 3, Unit 1, Napoleon’s World. Since we haven’t covered that particular era yet, it was interesting to read more about this famous historical person. Unfortunately, our large library (including ILL) did not carry any of the suggested books. We were able to get other books on Napoleon, but weren’t able to complete the literature guide questions. In order for my kids to get the general information, I had them do research on our World Book Encyclopedia CD-ROM, instead of printing off tons of pages from the DE or having them take over my laptop (what would I do then??). I skimmed through some of it, but there was an overwhelming amount of information each week.

Additional resources available for purchase include Map Aids, Evaluations, Pop Quiz, Lap Book packs, and Writing Aids. We used the Map Aids, which had every conceivable type of map for the time period we were studying. The Map Aids were provided to TOG by Knowledge Quest. There were blank maps for students and filled-in maps for moms. While they were a bit tedious to download, they did save me lots of time searching for just the right map for each lesson. The Map Aids are a great resource for making sure you cover geography thoroughly. I like being able to integrate geography with history instead of making it a whole separate subject.

Okay, now for the cons. First of all, although I know many people prefer having the digital format, I found it very difficult to navigate and to get a feel for how the program worked. For each week, there are over sixty pages of information!! Personally, that’s way too much to print or to read online. Also, it was hard to get the whole flow and scope of the program without having it all printed. As I mentioned above, there was a lot of information about each person/event/time period, but I either had to read it to my kids (they’re too old to enjoy that much information being read to them), or print it all out. It takes a MAJOR time commitment from the mom/teacher in order to prepare for each week. It’s difficult to find all of the books in the library. Another drawback is the price, especially considering that it only covers the teacher’s materials and student activity pages. All of the extras (maps, writing aids, review aids, lap books, etc.) are additional—not to mention buying at least some of the main books you’ll need to read throughout the year. Each year plan costs $170 for a year in DE and $225 for a year in the printed format. That’s really not enough of a difference to make me want to buy the DE version. They just rolled out a new option where you can get both the DE and printed versions of the year plan, but I can’t find the price (about $100 more than the DE alone, I think). It would cost at least that much to print it yourself, so it might be worth it to go that route if you like the idea of having the information on your computer, too.

Go check out Tapestry of Grace for yourself. You can download a FREE three-week trial to see how easy the download process is and all the reasons your friends are excited about Tapestry of Grace. You’ll find a lot of FREE helpful information there, too.

Birds, Bats, and Insects Oh My!

If you’re looking for a God-honoring, biblically-based, user-friendly, non-consumable science series for your K–6th graders, look no further than Apologia’s Young Explorer Series. Exploring Creation with Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day is a beautiful, hard-back, full-color science curriculum that will take your children (you can use it with multiple ages—another plus) on a thorough study of birds, bats, insects, and more.

With this creationistic curriculum, there’s no need to re-teach the biblical view of creation after reading about how birds evolved from elephants or something equally ridiculous. Children can read the chapters on their own, or you can read them aloud together. Charlotte Mason-type discussion questions are included at the end of each chapter, and notebooking is encouraged. Hands-on activities are an integral part of the learning process, and kits containing everything you need to complete the activities are available from a wide variety of homeschool science supply sites online. Everything can be easily adapted to the ages of your children.

Exploring Creation with Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day is extremely user-friendly, even for science-phobic moms. Children are naturally curious about the world around them; foster that creativity in a structured, biblical way with Apologia’s Young Explorer Series. Each book is a bargain $35. Science will become the highlight of your homeschool week!

Realistic Animal Play Sets

“More animals—cool!” were the first words out of my kids’ mouths as soon as they saw the box from Schleich. I thought we would send the whole lot (half a dozen assorted animals) to my nephew for his sixth birthday since my girls are eleven and almost-fourteen. But, no, the teenager snapped up the zebra and the bunny rabbit because they were “just soooo cute.” My eleven year old laid claim to the penguin (“I like it.”) and the monkey (“Me, in another form.”).

The Schleich figurines are not your typical cheap, plastic, fake-looking models. They are heavy-duty, well-made animals. I have never seen such exquisite detail on toys. They could even be collected and displayed.

The Schleich Web site and catalogue currently have over 500 figurines and play sets available, with more coming later this year. Their categories include farm life, wildlife, forest animals, plants and trees, human figurines, pets, dinosaurs, dogs, sea animals, prehistoric mammals, knights, elves, American frontier, and Smurfs. Of course, all of these categories include the appropriate accessories. Schleich play sets and figurines can also be found at specialty toy stores, Target, and Toys R Us.

Check out their Hobby Farm photo contest (open through March 31; complete rules can be found here): We are looking for the most creative farm diorama featuring our animals and accessories. Open to all age groups, we encourage family participation in building a farm setting that shows your imagination. Once you've finished your diorama, you just need to submit your best photograph (one only) to us via email (HFHphotocontest@Schleich-S.com).

Come On, Let's Celebrate!

Our culture has made the passage between girlhood and womanhood a curse. The Beautifully Made! three-book set by Generations of Virtue helps moms and daughters celebrate the blessings of womanhood in a godly, tasteful manner.

Beautifully Made is comprised of two books for daughters and one book for moms. Not sure what to tell your tweens about the upcoming changes to their bodies? Not liking the secular books available? Approaching Womanhood, the first book in the series, solves your dilemmas. It gives the facts, ma’am, nothing but the facts from a decidedly biblical perspective. Discussion questions are included at the end to foster open conversations between you and your daughters. Celebrating Womanhood, the second book in the series, helps you and your daughters mark their special day of passing from girlhood into womanhood and gives your daughters some helpful tips. Don’t worry, Generations of Virtue did not leave out you moms. The final book in the Beautifully Made! series is Wisdom From a Woman—Mother’s Guide. This book will be an invaluable resource as you decide on age-appropriate, graceful, biblical wisdom to share with your daughters.

This lovely set is only $18.99. My daughters and I were able to have some good discussions after reading these books, and they will hold a cherished spot on our bookshelves. Generations of Virtue also carries a full line of purity rings and books for different ages. Their motto is “Purity of Heart, Purity of Mind, Purity of Body.” Let’s raise a generation of virtuous girls!

Top 10 List for Homeschooling Must-Have Tools

Have you ever wondered what the most necessary tools are for homeschooling? Step into The Organized Homeschool Mom's schoolroom and find out. Here are her top ten must-have tools to get and stay organized for the school year. Remember, not all of these supplies have to be bought brand new at a fancy office supply store. You'll find you already have many of these items in your house, or that you have the materials to make your own tools. Shoeboxes make good math manipulative storage boxes, for example, and soup cans can be decorated to make pencil holders. Be creative, and get your children involved in the process. Above all, get started, it may take awhile. This is the list, check out the full article here for what to do with all these nifty tools.

  1. Bookshelves
  2. Binders
  3. 3-hole punch because not every piece of paper comes ready to file
  4. Baskets and/or shoe boxes (cardboard or Rubbermaid-type)
  5. Various small containers for paper clips, tacks, small manipulatives, erasers, and staples
  6. Letter stacking trays
  7. Calendars
  8. Lesson planners (books or computer programs)
  9. Timers
  10. Keep it organized! If you get it out, put it away right away and train you children to do the same thing.

"Let all things be done decently and in order" (1 Corinthians 14:40 NKJV).

ARTistic Pursuits

ARTistic Pursuits is for you if your children (or you) want to incorporate art into your homeschool day, but you don’t have time for preparations. ARTistic Pursuits is for you if you want your children to learn art theory along with drawing and color theory. ARTistic Pursuits is for you if you don’t want to make trips to the library to see color reproductions of master artwork. And, ARTistic Pursuits is for you if you want your kids to love art. Did I cover everyone? Every homeschool needs a grade-appropriate level of ARTistic Pursuits to round out its academics.

We test drove the book for Grades 4–6 Book Two, Color and Composition. Drawing books abound, but curriculum that thoroughly teaches color theory with real-life projects and American art are much harder to find. My favorite feature was the full-color reproductions of real art included right in the text. The author uses American art to illustrate each principle of color and composition per unit. She then points out the specific technique—no guessing. A short biography of the artist is included as well. My fifth grade daughter’s favorite feature was the use of fun items (stuffed animals and action figures) to compose still-life settings.
Each ARTistic Pursuits book is non-consumable and covers several grade levels, which makes it very affordable at $42.95 each (plus s/h). The art supplies recommended can be found easily at discount supply stores. The author gives a suggested schedule, but of course, you are free to adapt it to your family’s needs. Happy coloring!
